We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow with an interest in forensic mental health research and practice. The position is based in the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science (CFBS). CFBS brings together academics, clinicians, researchers and students from a variety of disciplines, including psychology, psychiatry, nursing, social work, law, occupational therapy and epidemiology. The focus of this position is to assist in the conduct of research at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health (Forensicare).
Forensicare is the state-wide provider of specialist forensic mental health services in Victoria, delivering a range of services based on a recovery oriented mental health framework for people living with mental illness. Services are tailored to different stages of recovery and range from assessment, early intervention and prevention, inpatient care, rehabilitation, and community transition support. Forensicare’s primary consumers are:
Forensicare provides services across three directorates - inpatient services at Thomas Embling Hospital, community and court services through the Community Forensic Mental Health Service, and prison based services in 12 Victorian prisons.

Forensicare is the state-wide provider of specialist forensic mental health services in Victoria, delivering a range of services based on a recovery oriented mental health framework for people living with mental illness. Services are tailored to different stages of recovery and range from assessment, early intervention and prevention, inpatient care, rehabilitation, and community transition support. Forensicare’s primary consumers are:
- Individuals with a mental illness at risk of, or involved in, the criminal justice system.
- Individuals who have carried out a criminal offence but who have been found not guilty, or unfit to be tried, under the CMIA 1997.
- Individuals within the community at risk of offending and/or who pose a risk to themselves or others.

About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
- Conduct literature reviews.
- Assist with the development of human research ethics applications related to Forensicare research program projects.
- Help engage with clinical and lived experience Forensicare staff proposing to or conducting research or evaluation projects to help build their capacity to engage in and successfully conduct, report on, and use research outcomes.
- Contribute to the conduct of data analysis and prepare oral and written presentations for internal and external audiences that clearly articulate project aims, research methods and findings and the implications of conducted research for Forensicare services and stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively across the University, across the Research Ecosystems and other central functions as required in order to deliver on Swinburne and Forensicare’s missions and strategies.
- Contribution to the development of strategic initiatives related to implementation of research and evaluation activities involving Forensicare and delivered in partnership with the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science.
Qualifications
- A doctoral qualification Psychology, Criminology, or a related discipline, in conjunction with relevant research or evaluation experience.
