Cross Connection Control Specialist [United States]

Purpose

Under general direction, executes the Company’s cross-connection control (backflow prevention) program. Performs annual and four-year recycled water inspections and some of the other duties assigned as operator of the water systems.

Accountabilities

  • Reports and communicates with leadership on matters regarding the condition and maintenance needs of facilities, daily activities, needed repairs, hazards, challenges, etc.
  • Maintains an accurate cross-connection control database, providing timely notifications of required actions to customers and performing follow-up actions.
  • Inspects customer premises to determine the presence of potential cross-connection control hazards and reports such hazards to the County Health Department. Communicates to the customer any corrective measures needed to protect the water system including backflow protection.
  • Maintains accurate records in the CIS Backflow Program.
  • Performs cross-connection testing every four years at recycled water user’s sites. Coordinates these inspections with the County Health Department.
  • Provides other recycled water contracted services as needed.
  • Answers public inquiries and complaints in a tactful and courteous manner. Keeps accurate and organized documents, safety procedures and records, preferably on the computer.
  • Operates various hand and power tools and mechanical equipment
  • Assists in the preparation and completion of service orders and other paperwork.
  • Prepares and maintains routine records and reports related to system operations.
  • Assists in making field and job-related decisions using Company policies and procedures.
  • Has authority to order compliance or to shut down non-complying facilities until deficiencies are corrected.
  • Attends meetings and pursues continuing education to stay current with changing laws and regulations related to cross-connection control, water quality, and recycled water.
  • Acts promptly in emergency situations.
  • May direct, train, and lead all aspects of others in performing related tasks.
  • Works weekends, holidays, overtime, and standby duty when required.
  • Drives Company vehicles and helps maintain the cleanliness by keeping the vehicles organized, washed, and waxed.
  • Travels occasionally.
  • Follows all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Maintains safe working conditions.
  • Reports all unsafe activities to supervisor, Manager of Safety Services, and/or Human Resources.
  • Performs various other duties within the Production Department as may be assigned by his or her supervisor designed staff.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. and have equivalent skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Possession of a State of California Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health and the ability to obtain a State of California Grade 3 Water Distribution Operator Certificate within eighteen months.
  • Treatment Grade 1 issued by the SWRCB DDW or be able to obtain it within 18 months of hire date. Treatment grade 2 desired.
  • Cross-connection training equivalent to AWWA Cross Connection Specialist Course. Required to hold CA-NV AWWA Cross Connection Specialist certification or equivalent, or be able to obtain within 18 months.
  • Required to hold a CA-NV AWWA Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification or equivalent, or be able to obtain within 18 months.
  • Must pass Communications Center Operator 1 skills assessment within six months.
  • Effective verbal and written skills to communicate in English with internal and external customers under normal and adverse conditions.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish language) highly preferred.
  • Must have effective phone etiquette and customer relations skills.
  • Must have basic computer skills, including Windows PC operations knowledge, MS Office including Word and Excel, and experience with PC laptops or tablets.
  • Work responsibly with minimal supervision.
  • Must have a high degree of accuracy.
  • Maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. This includes, but is not limited to, those to whom the position reports to, supervisors, coworkers, public, vendors, etc.
  • Exercise independent judgment, discretion, professionalism, and tact in all areas of work including matters of a sensitive and/or confidential manner.
  • Follow Company rules, procedures, and directions from a supervisor.
  • Willing and able to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as required on any shift.
  • Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Have experience working with GIS and Emergency Programs.

Compensation

$37.89 - $52.88/HR DOE
